Yes, it could very well be a formatting issue. They must be of the same record type. You can have one column with numeric values and another with aggregated numbers as text.
You can test this by selecting some cells and looking down to see if they are grouped together in the status bar.

I wrote a real vlookup that takes a value from another sheet.
My problem is that the moment I copy it to the next line, I change it back to the value of the previous line.
